Simone Lettice
South Australian born Visual Artist, Simone Lettice, has been painting and exhibiting her distinctively bold works for more than a decade.
Warmly critiqued as ‘a rising star’ and ‘an extraordinarily talented young artist’, Simone launched her career with the sellout debut exhibit, ‘Emergence’ in March of 2007. Numerous follow-up exhibitions and commissions later, her now considerable body of work is held in private collections both in Australia and overseas.
A lifelong fascination with abstraction and stylisation of form, inevitably led Simone to a study of graphic design. Strong design sense and economical use of sculptural line lend her work signature strength.
Maturing and evolving through her collections, whether in her figurative works, or more non-representational pieces, Simone has ever remained faithful to her reverence for abstraction. In her current collection, ‘grit’ - remarkable in its step aside from anything she has produced to date, Simone introduces a vocabulary of abstraction uniquely and authentically her own. Distilling the symbolic language of her inner psyche, she employs a choreographed interplay of sculptural shapes and juxtaposed colours to develop a dialogue between fragility and strength. This theme frequently informing her work over the years, parallels her ongoing struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Commenting on the creative process behind her new work, Simone says the initial design; intuitive, fluid and spontaneous, is followed by layers of precision paint work and/or thousands of little dots painted with a tiny paintbrush to reach her desired aesthetic. This application is very meditative and calming she says.
Compelled to create from a young age, Simone is never happier than when she has a paintbrush in her hand. She lives in Adelaide, with her darlings - her husband, daughter, cat and dog.
